BBC College of Production Competition Winner

5 May, 2012

I created this short video during my Television and Video Production course at Southampton Solent University. We were tasked with creating a short 3-4 minute video based on a loose brief to be entered into the BBC College of Production video competition. The competition itself took place amongst a variety of Skillset Media Academies and out of about fifteen different entries our video was selected as the winner of the competition, awarding us with our video being displayed indefinitely on the BBC College of Production website and £500 of media vouchers to be shared with the rest of the team.

As a group project my role spread across all aspects of production; from the writing and development of the concept, to production where I was primarily the director of photography, to post production where I assisted with polishing the cut and tidying the audio. Some notable decisions that I made included the football pitch metaphor and overcranking the camera to achieve the slow motion effect. Other members of the team included Becky Dennis, Graham Fitzgerald, Nicola Gander and Torrin Holland, who all contributed equally to the project.

I am incredibly proud of this achievement and thankful towards all of the crew, cast, tutors and the folks at Solent’s Test Park who generously gave us the time and resources to make this happen. Here’s what others had to say about the project:

“This is a well-considered, effective film that makes its point without unnecessary puff. The producers had clearly studied the brief and stuck to it. It was the stand-out film of all considered and the production values shone through. We look forward to showing it on the CoP website and hope it inspires others to enter their films in future competitions,” – Paul Buller, BBC College of Production website editor (2012)

“Winning the College of Production competition is a huge achievement for these talented Solent students. They approached this project with real professionalism and creativity and worked hard to deliver a film which demonstrates the very high standards demanded of all the students here. We are very proud of them.” - Kate Iles, Tutor at Southampton Solent University (2012)
